A joint press release from the Wem Economic Forum and Wem Transition Town Initiative states: "... have identified the need for Wem traders to advertise their goods and services to better attract local people and visitors into the town to shop. The businesses listed above are the first entries on the Wem Local Transition Town Initiative directory of businesses and services in the Wem area. These initial uploads were part of a pilot. The second phase of this project is now underway. The leaflet 'Shopping in Wem' is now nearing completion. The leaflet is a hard copy version of the information that will be carried on this website. By its nature, the leaflet will be have less currency than the Internet version. Shopping in Wem will build up gradually on the website. Eventually information on individual businesses will be accessible via (1) the map of 'Shops in Wem', (2) Shops by category and (3) An Alphabetical list of Shops in Wem. The overall aim of the project is to showcase Wem Town as a positive venue for consumers and visitors to use, by emphasising ‘local’, to encourage, i.e. shopping locally, as well as buying and selling of goods made/grown locally, and the associated long term benefits of this. We also hope to encourage and welcome people from the wider area surrounding Wem to shop in Wem (rather than going to larger urban centres), thereby both supporting local businesses and reducing the amount of travel. This directory will allow Wem business owners to experiment with a web presence without risk and allow them to see the potential for a more interactive website which could be supplied by a (hopefully) local IT specialist. An updated entry for those businesses could then remain on the Wem Local directory which will contain a link to the individual website. The directory is supported by Wem Local Transition Town Initiative and is available to those businesses who support the aims of the group. If you are interested in your business being featured on this website or the forthcoming leaflet please contact: webmaster@wemlocal.org.uk Wem offers a range of shopping facilities unknown in many larger towns and possibly unknown to some Wemians. We hope that this directory will help Wemians to shop locally. Towns and villages with locally-based retail outlets and services retain more spending power within their communities whereas money drains from towns with large numbers of shops that are part of national and international chains. A recent report suggested that small market towns should look to the marketing of their ‘high streets’ as a means of survival.
