AN INVITATION TO ALL WEMIANS

A ‘Transition Town’ is a community that takes seriously the threats to our way of life caused by our diminishing oil supplies and climate change. Prince Charles commenting on these issues in a speech he gave in Brazil on 12th March 2009 issued a warning that nations have “less than 100 months to act” to save the planet from irreversible damage caused by climate change.
The Transition Town movement invites you to consider how we can work together to protect ourselves and our children’s future from these two threats. Wem Local Transition Town will seek to work in partnership with all members of our local community including the local Parish Councils and Shropshire Council. We hope that you will consider putting yourself forward to help us with this important work for our mutual future security.
Yours sincerely
Terry Hobday
[Convenor for the Wem Transition Town Initiative]

Myths

  1. We can wait.
  2. We should fix the economy first.
  3. Reducing emissions will cost too much.
  4. Reducing emissions will reduce growth and cost jobs.
  5. Reducing emissions will lead to higher energy costs for consumers.
  6. Reducing emissions will hurt trade and competitiveness.
  7. Tackling climate change requires radical new technologies.
  8. Only developed countries need to (or should) act now; developing countries can wait.
  9. Saving forests is primarily about preserving biodiversity.
  10. Markets and regulation are in opposition.
Realities
  1. We have a decade or less to act; waiting will significantly increase risks and costs.
  2. Fixing the economy requires reducing fossil fuel dependence; otherwise we will sow the seeds of the next crisis.
  3. The ‘costs’ are in reality investments that are manageable, and in many cases highly profitable.
  4. Clean energy investments will likely stimulate growth, create jobs and spur carbon productivity.
  5. Increased energy efficiency and use of renewables can stabilise energy prices and reduce total energy costs.
  6. The impacts on trade are not as large as often described with relatively few industries affected.
  7. Increased technological innovation will accelerate progress and lower costs but we have the technologies we need to start using today.
  8. We won’t solve the problem unless developed and developing countries act together ~ now.
  9. Biodiversity is important but forests are also fundamental to protecting the climate.
  10. Markets and regulation can play complementary roles.
A key feature of the initiative is the development and encouragement of
Local Sustainability for Wem.
